When it comes to the movie Pacific Rim, it seems that a lot of the fans are split, with some absolutely loving the film, while others feel that it was less than impressive. Meanwhile, while Pacific Rim did manage to make $408m worldwide, most of that came from China, with the movie only managing to gross $102m in the US.
However, it was pretty much a given that we would get to see Pacific Rim 2 being made, with Charlie Hunnam confirmed to return for the sequel, while it had also been suggested that we would get to see Idris Elba returning from the dead. Now though, it looks like we might not get to see a Pacific Rim sequel at all, as it has been put on indefinite hold.
According to reports, there has been quite a bit of tension between Universal and Legendary, with Legendary being heavily invested in China, where Pacific Rim made a lot of money, while Universal do not feel that there is enough interest for a sequel. This has led to the two studios deciding to put back the production date for Pacific Rim 2, with some suggesting that it will never get made.
While there have been plenty of disappointed fans, there have also been some very excited fans at the prospect of Guillermo Del Toro being freed up. Some fans have called for the moviemaker to move on to direct Hellboy 3, while others want him to get to work on his Justice League Dark movie. It will be interesting to see what he does decide to direct next.
